10th Interview Spotlighting the Boss: MOOK MILLION$

24 Sep

Tenth Interview highlighting Entrepreneurs and Moguls who are ahead of the Curve!
Today we spent our time with MooK Millions.
-Where you from?
Harlem NYC

-Age?
Old Enough to Qualify Young Enough to Satisfy.

-Tell my readers exactly what you do-  Businesses you own, ventures, products, etc-
I am a Mogul. I am the CEO of S.H.I.N.E Enterprises which is comprised of S.H.I.N.E Entertainment, The S.H.I.N.E Collection (Clothing Line), & Shining Star Studded Ent (Promo Company). I am also Co-CEO of #FRMT (The Filthy Rich Money Team) I also write poetry, movie scripts, plays etc….and I coach basketball.

-How did you get the entrepreneurial bug?
It was innate for the most part. I watched my pops hustle as well. He used to own a store on the Grand Concourse in the BX, be a vendor in the streets with socks, t-shirts, etc, & he sold drugs. Ever since I was young, I had a passion for creativity and generating income. In middle school I used to purchase junk food from the store and sell it for more during class. Along with that I had a team of people who made designs on graph paper and we sold it during class.

-How did you get in the game/current foray?
I first started out as the VP of my boy Jaxz’s label Loose Canonz Ent. Eventually I felt it was time to be the captain of my own ship.

-What made you embrace your position?
I’ve always been a leader. I’m very creative and innovative, plus I don’t mind taking risks. I’m not afraid of failure because I am a student of life. I learn from all experiences therefore I’m built for my position. I can deal with being praised & ridiculed. But most of all I accept responsibility for my actions.

-What keeps you in your position?
My focus, ambitions, & my supporting cast. There are times when I want to take a break and even question things, but God usually has a way of keeping me grounded and focused with loving and supportive people and clear vision of purpose.

-What are your secrets to success?
My grandfather once told me “Find something you love to do and you will never work a day in your life.” I believe people have to find their niche, true passion, & nurture their talents. Success has to be defined by your own definition, not societies.

-What don’t you like in the game?
Well many of my fields are over saturated. Everyone wants to be a promoter these days and many events don’t capture the essence of partying. Same goes for music in which I manage artists, everyone wants to be a rapper, but not an artist. Authenticity has been traded in for copying. Too much swagga jacking and no originality. People are just doing things for money as opposed to finding their calling.

-What do you like in the game?
I love managing artists because I have a true passion for music. I don’t just hear it but I listen to it. All kinds, all artists. To be apart of something creative feels great! I love promoting because I know how to party. I learned from older people, first and foremost my grandmother who took me to an Eastern Star Dance at 12 yrs old. I love helping people get out of their everyday lives and enhance that moment in which they’re at my events. It feels good to make others smile and give them great memories. As far as my clothing line goes, I love fashion immensely. Many people of all ages compliment me on my style. So I figured I can bring my visions to life for others as well.

-What would you change in the game?
The politics and the Hollywood aspect of it. Promoters now feel like a hot event has to have exaggerated budgets and feature artists, actors/actresses, etc…Get back to real music in hip hop as opposed to cars, clothes, money, jewels, and women all day. And I would get rid of all the clothing lines that people started just cause it was the thing to do.

-If I gave you a milli what or whom would
you invest in?
Me and my businesses. After I flip that and give you your initial investment plus interest, I would invest in others like myself.

-What sets you apart from the game?
My originality. I’m not afraid to be me. I won’t compromise my character for anything. Plus I care for others and invest into my community and culture.

-What made you love hip hop?
The creativity of lyrics. It’s poetry in motion over melodic sounds. I just love it.

-Who is your fav rapper/lyricist?
The Notorious B.I.G

-Best person to ever play your position?
Me. But on a mainstream level I would say Diddy.

-Best rapper alive?
Jay-Z

-Advice for my readers?
Follow your dreams. Nurture your talents. Be compassionate and share your success. Overall #Live #Laugh & #Love. “Incremental production leads to Incredible progress.”

-Your definition of success?
Continued growth as a person and mogul. Impacting the world, my community, and culture. My businesses generating wealth and employing many people. My family being set for life.

-Any projects you’d like to promo?
Exotic Saturdays @Perks Uptown in Harlem on 123st & Manhattan Ave. Grown & Sexy Mature Crowd. Ladies Free before 12. Gents reduced. ***Oct 20 My Birthday Celebration @Perks Uptown

Exclusive Interview #8. Spotlighting DJ XXXOTIC MAMI- CEO XTREME104FM- PIVOT RECORDS- HIP HOP TYMES

10 Sep

The eighth interview in a series highlighting up and coming entrepreneurs and leaders.
Today we interview DJ XXXOTIC MAMI- CEO XTREME104FM- PIVOT RECORDS- HIP HOP TYMES

And without further ado:

DJ XXXOTIC MAMI/CEO XTREME104FM- PIVOT RECORDS- HIP HOP TYMES

-Where you from?
I am from South Jamaica Queens originally.

-Age?
A woman never tells. (giggle) I will say this though my resume speaks for my experience and longevity in the game. I have worked with some of the best and learned a lot. Things that I share with my team and all those whom I have the fortune of doing business with today. I am forwarding thinking, and about my brand and business. I appreciate those who feel the same, and act on it.

-Tell my readers exactly what you do-
Businesses you own, ventures, products, etc.
I am CEO/ C.O.O of Xtreme 104FM which is a nationally rated Internet Radio brand. We are the reigning UMA award winners for our broadcasting of the A&R Report, which I am the host of along with Dizzy Brown and SuperAgentDre. I also am the CEO of Pivot Music Group. In a nutshell I am a radio personality as well an industry executive, and figurehead. I have been blessed to make a lot of great connections and build not only my brand, but the brand of both PIVOT and XTREME104FM. We welcome everyone to check out our bimonthly publication HIP HOP TIMES which highlights industry news, and unsigned artists. Also we have Straightfromthebooth.com which is a community of like-minded creative individuals who support Hip Hop as a whole, and each other. Our motto is we make unsigned artist mainstream. Through our marketing strategies, promotional initiatives, and widespread reach via Social Media as well as grass roots approaches as well.

-How did you get the entrepreneurial bug?
I’ve always had the entrepreneurial bug, anyone that knows me knows that I think business at all times. I started out laying the groundwork like anyone else and paid my dues, but I always had my eyes on ownership; it just took time. Where me and my team are at now is a blessing, but by no means are we content, its always about the next level. Heightening our brand awareness, and capability.

-How did you get in the game/current foray?
I am a DJ hence the name DJ XXXOTIC MAMI. I started by carrying DJ crates for DJ Clue and Desert Storm when he started at Amazura in Queens NY, not laptops but milk carton crates of vinyl records. I have played/hosted/frequented every venue you can name in the tri-state area, and beyond. I was doing internet radio before actually heading a station. While working for others I always knew I had what it took, but I also know that the blueprint is best built on simmer, so I took my time, learned the business and when the lane opened up I took advantage of the opportunity that presented itself. I have surrounded myself with great people who work hard and we support each other, making sure that the #XTREMETEAM is and will remain a household name.

-What made you embrace your position?
My ambitions made me embrace it. It order to have anything in this world, you have to earn it. I work hard and I relish the rewards, but I always think bigger! The respect I get industry wise, and outside of makes it all worth it. Seeing the dreams of my team come true is rewarding as well.

-What keeps you in your position?
Hard work, Dedication, and most of all knowing my worth as well as the game. HIP HOP is evolutionary, meaning that it changes and to stay relevant you have to change with it. I keep my eyes and ears to the street and mainstream. I am not called the “Queen of the Underground” for no reason (laughs). We work hard on this side, and we appreciate being respected for it. There is not an aspect of my brand that I neglect, I am very hands on and that’s what keeps me where I am at.

-What are your secrets to success?
There aren’t no secrets, opportunity is a universal thing; its on the individual to make the most of it.  I always tell people if you work hard things will happen. The only place Success comes before Work is in the dictionary!!!

-What don’t you like in the game?
People who overestimate their value and do not understand that you have to earn your keep in this game. On top of that, most importantly, know the business.

-What do you like in the game?
EVERYTHING ELSE! I love Hip Hop. I have loved it since I was a child. The art, the business, the opportunities. Couldn’t knock it if I tried.

-What would you change in the game?
I would change some of the people, but I’m not gonna say no names. My publicist told me to behave.

-If I gave you a milli what or whom would
you invest in?
#XTREMETEAM. Most importantly our community services division headed by Kwame Davis. YOu can visit Pmggivesback to check out our community service initiatives. We are about more than the music, we are about the culture, the people. Our people!  I would invest more into outlets that provide opportunities and uplifting.

-What sets you apart from the game?
Nothing. I AM HIP HOP. I am apart of it, I love it, I live for it. On an individually level, I am cocky so I would tell that there is no one like me, but still and all we are ALL APART OF and CONTRIBUTORS TO HIP HOP as a whole.

-What are your thoughts on 360 deals?
This is where the executive in me comes in. I think that they have their place, but people must do their homework. Not all deals with be customized for one end or the other, its on the individual to make sure their paperwork is right for their situation.

-What made you love hip hop?
The lyrics, I loved the articulation and creativity of my favorite artists. They said some of the things that I was thinking; some of the things that people in my neighborhood were thinking, and the game gave them a chance to be heard by the masses. That’s powerful.

-Who is your fav rapper/lyricist?
Missy Elliott, T.I. and Eric B and Rakim.

-Best person to ever play your position?
You would have to say some of the greats like Russell, L.A. Reid, Kevin Liles, Chris Lighty (RIP), Shakie Steward (RIP), and Jay Z’s of the world to name a few. Executives who had an impact on the game of HIP HOP and its progression

-Best rapper alive?
A lot of you haven’t heard him/her yet. But don’t fret, they will be coming out of the Pivot Music Group camp really soon.

-Advice for my readers?
Check out the Xtreme Team, we are really working hard to give you quality music. We broadcast 7 days a week, we have a tremendous line up. You can check us out : http://www.xtreme104FM.com and on Tune-IN

-Your definition of success?
Respect from your peers, and Numbers, because they don’t lie. WE all know that. Anything that I speak of I can back it up with the numbers. That’s where society is at now, love it or hate it. Its about the numbers, your reach, and your standing.

-Any projects you’d like to promo?
Yeah DJ XXXotic Mami and Xtreme104FM as a house hold name!!!!!

Exclusive Interview #7. Spotlighting Don Jones, founder of Phoenix Fitness Group.

1 Sep

The seventh interview in a series highlighting up and coming entrepreneurs and leaders.
Today we interview Don Jones, founder of Phoenix Fitness Group

And without further ado:

-Where you from?
I am New Jersey born and raised. I grew up in Somerdale in Camden County. Currently I reside in Hackensack, Bergen County

-Age?
38.

-What is your title(s)?
I am the founder of Phoenix Fitness Group as well as a Program Supervisor at the International Youth Organization in Newark, NJ where I supervise healthy living and environmental programming.

-What certification(s) do you hold?
I have a bachelor’s degree in Sociology with an abundance of experience in behavioral management. The personal training certifications I hold are from AAAI/ISMA and NCSF (national council on strength and fitness). I am also a Level 1 coach certified by USA track & field.

-How did you get into training people professionally?
I have been into sports and fitness since a youth, and competed in track & field as a high schooler, at Sterling HS in Somerdale, and as a collegian, first at FDU and finally at Montclair State, where I accumulated many championships and was an NCAA qualifier. Later, I became an assistant track coach at New Jersey Institute of Technology when I decided to purse a certification in personal training to increase my profile as a coach.

-How long have you been a trainer?
I have been a personal trainer and coach for about 5 years now .

-What made you embrace your position?
When I first got the opportunity to share my knowledge of fitness and track & field with novice athletes, I knew that coaching and fitness training was my path. I embrace to opportunity to teach and guide a person to achieving their personal and fitness goals. To see someone have a breakthrough or achieve a feat they have never accomplished, it is nice to know that I had a part in it. It makes me work harder to achieve my goals and continue to share knowledge and insight.

-What keeps you in your position?
Love of sports, athletics, and fitness is what keeps me doing this. There is always an opportunity to learn a new technique or exercise, and always a new experience to be had. There are still millions of people out there that need to hear my message of positive energy and spirit in order to live healthy and abundant.

-What are your secrets to success?
If I told you, it wouldn’t be a secret. But honestly, success is not a secret. Success can be achieved by anyone that sets clear, concise, and attainable goals. I always look forward; I can’t dwell on something for too long, even if it is a victory, because the next opportunity for success may pass me by.

-What sets you apart from the game?
I don’t feel that I am a typical trainer. I encourage my clients to set goals based on the life they lead in order to achieve the life they envision. There have been times when I’ve conducted a training session that didn’t involve physical exercises. Occasionally, clients come to training sessions with a lot on their mind and we take the time to sort out life, so they can get back to living and being able to maintain a healthy balance between their physical and mental.

-What do you love about training?
Everything; the accomplishment, the failure, the sacrifice. Spectators see the  athletes celebrate victory on the field; athletes know that victories begin with your training.

-Hate about it?
Excuses. Nothing bothers me more than procrastination when it comes to fitness and living healthy. You can ‘t put off being healthy until tomorrow; if you are not living healthy today, there may be no tomorrow.

-What are ppl doing wrong in the gym?
Getting to the gym in the first place is a major “right” for most people, but once you get there, sometimes it is a different story. I guess what I hate to see most is people not using complete range of motion throughout an exercise. For example, it doesn’t matter if you are bench pressing 300 lbs if you only move the bar 3 and half inches. Folks need to understand the systems in the body and how they work in order to get the most out of exercises. If not, you are selling yourself short.

-Do exercisers really lose more weight than calories cutters by 84% ?
Well that depends on who you ask. If a person exercises and manages calorie consumption, they are more likely to achieve their goals quickly and thoroughly, and maintain their desired weight. If a person just depends on one or the other, results are very dependant on physiology. You need calories in order to exercise, because that helps to produce the energy needed to move.

-Thoughts on no carb, south beach diets and atkins?
They are not things that I would suggest. There are huge differences in “going on a diet” and having a healthy diet. When you “go on a diet”, you eventually come off that diet, then all of your issues return. When you have a healthy diet and combine that with a workout regiment you are bound to get results that are healthier and longer lasting. (as in lifetime)

-Favorite exercise?
I’m a track guy so I love running drills and core exercises. I am also a fan of plyometric exercises (jumping and bounding for power and strength)

-Where can people find you at on the web and in person?
I can be reached by email at DJFITPRO@gmail.com
and at
http://www.facebook.com/PhoenixFitnessGroup

-Advice for my readers?
The longest journey begins with a single step. You must take that step. Do not be intimidated or afraid. Your body is a temple; maintain it as such. There is no reason to wait to make your life healthier and longer.

-Your definition of success?
Success is whatever you put your mental and physical powers to regardless if your goal is achieved in the manner that you envisioned it. It is what you are willing to sacrifice to achieve those goals and how you treat people on your way up.

-Any projects you’d like to promo?
On September 22, in association with Vida Wellness, Phoenix Fitness Group presents How Sweet Is It Really? A discussion on sweeteners, snacking, & empty calories and a fat burning fitness demonstration.

The event will take place at Vida Wellness 247 Crooks Ave, Clifton, NJ. We will have an educating discussion on the nutritive and non-nutritive sweeteners used in the foods that you eat daily, find alternatives to sweet snacks, and learn how to get the most out of your calorie consumption. After learning the basics on sweeteners and good snacking habits, join in on a fitness demonstration that will get you burning calories and fat as well as teach you exercises and stretches you can do at work, school, and on the go.

Exclusive! First in a series: Interview with Basquiat. Writers pay attention.

21 Jul

Exclusive interview with Basquiat.
First in a series spotlighting emerging entrepreneurs and businessmen.

With no further ado:

-Where you from?
I am from Dyckman, but I was also raised in Harlem for a good portion of my life. So more than anything I would have to represent both as being the places that influenced my upbringing.

-Age?
30 years old.

-How did you get in the game?
Getting into writing and media was sort of like happen stance. I’ve always been able to write and am pretty proficient at communicating and articulating myself. I was introduced to the writing and blogging game by a very good friend of mine, CJ, of Lynx Entertainment in London. She kind of inspired me to use my talents. In addition, another close friend of mine was influential in my actual application. He was doing an interview and recalled how often people would tell him that he was capable of more than what he was doing. So I definitely wanna shout out Leeky of TGO.
My brother, and friends were an encouragement as well, making me aware of the fact that I could put my past behind me and achieve some things.

-What made you embrace your position?
The reception that I got. I was afforded an opportunity over at Parle Magazine, and with that came more exposure, with greater feedback. GX Media had a lot to do with it as well. The more that I was around the industry so to say and given opportunities to sharpen my skill I was grateful and tried to make the most of it.

-What keeps you in your position?
More than anything, being humble and always willing to learn. I am a firm believer in supporting people, especially creative people. Those who are from where I’m from, and I don’t mean neighborhood wise; more so, the same obstacles and struggles. I have a profound respect for ambitious people. In addition, I have a great support system, and I was made a promise, as well I made one to reach for the sky’s and stay committed.

-What are your secrets to success?
I don’t really have any secrets. I’ve found a way to follow the blueprint that I saw materialize, and that’s hard work and being opportunistic. Where I’m from we have this paradigm that speaks of being willing to do anything to make it. I have people depending on me, and I have people that I look up to; for those reasons, I have pledged to give 110%.

-What don’t you like in the game?
I don’t like the fact that it’s changing to a point where its not about your character, its about how well someone can use you. More often people are associated with others that they have no reason to respect, and that’s a deadly combination. People re-invent themselves on a daily basis, and others commend them for it. I would say more than anything that is what I hate.

-What do you like in the game?
I like that it breeds opportunity. If you are willing to put the work in you too will reap the benefits. I’m inspired by success, and business-oriented people, regardless of what their craft is. Anyone that is reaching their goals- I take my hat off to them.

-What would you change in the game?
I probably would change the perspectives of those who are running it. I find it perplexing that the same methods that someone will criticize, sometime later you will find them utilizing it. To me that’s counterproductive and indicative of the state that we are in. If there was a way to take each individual on their merit before their buzz, I think there would be some progress- in life, and in the so-called game.

-If I gave you a milli what or whom would you invest in?
I would invest it in my community, the people who I have always looked at as my peers. That’s where karma, and anything else begins. There are some truly talented individuals sitting beside all of us that were never given a chance; focus on that and everything else will take care of itself. Outsourcing is not always the key.
-What sets you apart from the game?
I would have to say that being me sets me apart from others. I am not a follower by any means. I am an individual that gives respect, therefore I feel as though I deserve it all costs. I am me, by any means necessary. Anyone who truly knows me will agree, I’ve never tried to wear someone else’s shoe size. I play the cards I am dealt, and I make the best of that. I put my faith in a higher power and I prioritize working hard to get results, I don’t believe in hand outs.

-What are your thoughts on 360 deals?
I think that 360 deals have a way of holding artists hostage. There was a time when an artist saw light at the end of the tunnel by way of endorsements, and shows, etc now its like Pusha T said “contracts all *expletive* up.” I don’t really know where to point the blame, but I think everyone will agree. At the same time though, all obstacles have a way of making you work harder and by far we can say that there has been opportunity for artists to feed their families, and contribute to the culture which is what its all about.

-What made you love hip hop?
The lyrics. I remember listening to music that expressed what I felt and what I saw around me. I’ve always been a big fan of what you would call reality rap. The music that inspires us, the culture. It shows in the way I carry myself, I am a product of Hip Hop, I am a product of the inner city, the hardships. We all have the same story, and the way we express it, is Hip Hop.

-Who is your fav rapper?
Jay Z.

-Fav lyricist?
Styles P.

-Best person to ever play your position?
Me. But if you mean in terms of on a journalistic note, I’ve looked up to guys like Bonsu Thompson. I remember getting the Source and seeing his name, and aspiring to be exactly that. Also I look up to the brother Sway, I think he is a tremendous journalist. Also Big Tigger had a swag when it came to media, that made me think an average person like myself had a chance.

-Best rapper alive?
Jay Z without a doubt. If not, Nas.

-Advice for my readers?
Stay true to yourself and your dreams. Anything is possible, and that is a fact. Never forget where you came from, and who helped you get where you are today.

-Your definition of success?
Being able to sleep at night knowing that I did the best I could. I am not defined by anything other than the respect that those I truly value, have for me.

-Any projects you’d like to promo?
For sure if you don’t have it already get the Vaygez Blakk project, Dame of the Game Vol 2, Support my family GX MEDIA, and PARLE MAGAZINE; The “Who’s Next” as well as “Book Edition” of Parle are bothing coming out shortly so be n the lookout for that. Xtreme Magazine Vol 5 will be out towards the end of July, quite possibly sooner.  Welcome to Georgetown, my brother’s project will be out in August, and Down Syndrome as well. Shout to TGO and my brother Bam as well with GlobeStarz management, and Grade A Hip Hop. Thank you to Dyckman, Amsterdam Ave, and The Block (7th to 8th).

I also want to take a moment to thank the brother Tone Cash, an extremely talented and positive brother for giving me this opportunity. Continue support him and his brand, as we all will undoubtedly find success in supporting each other and working together more easily than disengaging.
