Fake it till you make it. (And other concepts you might like)

29 Jun

Fake it till you make it.
(And other concepts you might like)

Ok so it sounds nuts. I know. But I have a friend who subscribes to this theory and we will explore it today.

-Fake it till you make it is a simple concept that dictates you implicate your greatness before it has arrived in its fullness.

Sounds perfect I’d say. You see here you are being implored to put forward the millionaire, the king, the champ. Its akin to method acting. Get into the roll and you will succeed. And for some its the simple act of pretending they are king that makes them king. In life perception is key in any arena. If people perceive you to be successful often times you will be. People buy what you sell so the question is are you selling the thrifty kid who lives in his moms basement? The cheapskate who is smart? Or perhaps the put together businessman who is seeking partners not change? Its that’s simple to be the same guy and lose the same clients,
partners, and or investors. Solution?

-Act As If.
Act As If is simply being who you will become. When you are selling, act as if. When you are closing- Act As If. Be the Ceo. He’s the boss and if you are the captain of your ship so are you. Are you an industry leader? Act As If. Now I’m nut suggesting you go around pretending and misleading clients as an SEO genius or some equivalent. What you should be doing is exuding the confidence an expert has. Mastery of a subject or concept will add confidence and should bolster your ability to attract clients et al. Act As If means you be the BOSS. If you are aiming for success you should be the boss. Aren’t you the boss? If not you will spend all of your dies building someone else’s dreams. You Decide.

-What you do daily will dictate your success level.
Your habits should dictate success. A winner does. And so does a fake it till you make it king. You see you have to look the part and act the part. Are you dressed for success even to simply post a blog? You should be. You will see the winner or the loser based on your appearance- and so will everyone else. Ready to be the boss? You get your To Do List done. And so does the fake it till you make it guy- your list is the basis for success. You get it done in order to win. No matter your position to get to the top you have to do the daily grind.
Get it done people.

-Daily is your mentality that of a Leader or a follower?
If you wake up and treat your venture as a job- you have a boss. And you have failed. If you get up and don’t tell yourself you will conquer, you will be conquered. If you have a worker bee mentality than you will always be in the hive. Sorry folks but I don’t see success in this mentality. What we focus on mentally is what we achieve and if you focus on a sucky job- you will always have one.
If you focus on Modern Warfare 3- great. Congrats- you have achieved NOTHING. Now we could argue that you can build team skills, and leadership skills, blah, blah, blah,
Truth be told. You are losing. A leader focuses on getting tasks done. The leader will bring out the best in others. Leadership is a character that is built by doing. So when you wake up in the morning what do you intend to build? Good game stats or blog hits that total over a million unique visits in less than a year?
Do you look for knowledge or check email for the bosses newest missive on how he wants your productivity to increase and when?
These actions aren’t smart or productive.
Waking up and meditating is.
Starting with reading a book is. Intaking instruction and exhaling stress works. Getting the things you hate done first is smart. These things are the making of a leader. A follower dreads leaving bed. He hits the snooze seven times. He avoids productivity at work. He sneaks Facebook time on work servers. A leader will work hard at work until he is his own boss. And then works harder. Everyday you have to tell yourself you are the boss and then move from that perspective.
Get it done people.

BURN BRIDGES, MOVE FASTER.

27 Jun

Burn Bridges, move faster.

So many people will tell you never burn your bridges. Or be careful which bridges you burn. And its sound advice.
WRONG.
Burn Bridges GO Faster.

I know. ‘Tony went off the deep end.’
‘Tony thinks he’s John Nash
(A Beautiful mind).
‘This jerk is crazy!’
And you are welcome to your opinions. I actually want them. You see I subscribe to the school of forward motion. Life is not to be spent in the rear view mirror.

-When you don’t focus on your future you live in your past.
Are you living in your past? Do you relish the days of your D1 sports games? You miss them and I say why? You were a champ. And if you’re not get over it. I’m not being a jerk- hear me out. You were a champ and if you feel you’re not one now you are wrong. If you feel simply off the path- let’s get you back. Everyone is a winner. But the winners actions separate him from the losers. You feel you’re not doing it right than focus on a goal. A future scenario. This is how you get on your path to greatness. You were meant to be great so why aren’t you doing it? You are and not getting it? So examine your habits, goals, and company you keep. My regular readers see where I’m going with this. Your past is worthless except on your resume. Only use the past as a chain of small successes to build your momentum. Everything else is wasting time and emotions. Put those energies and efforts into building the future.

-No regrets.
You made mistakes. Me too. Life is going to deal you crappy hands repeatedly. In fact most people who go to the World Series of Poker lose. It happens. The winners come back. They ante up and win their spot at the table or pay the ten grand and start with the regular joes all over. And some winners are at that table for their prior actions. Ever come in second? Yup me too. And in that moment you were the first loser. However, the winner is the guy who gets up to train the day after the olympics. The no regrets mentality requires you have none. You put them in a box, the box in a safe, safe on a boat, and sink the boat in the baltic. I’m serious. Regrets will drown you. So drown them first.

-Forward motion.
That’s it. You get going and move on. You don’t think. Now wait.
I’m not endorsing ignorance.
I’m endorsing trusting your intuition.
I’m endorsing building your skill sets and your confidence to the point your mentor brings you on stage at events.
In your life, forget your career, you either do it or you don’t. And the easy way to do it:
IS TO DO IT.
The book eat that frog means just that. You take the hardest task and do it. And I say the hardest task is to Simply DO. Don’t think. Don’t waste time. If you have become goal orientated. If you have a plan, a mentor, and a business you believe in. Just DO IT. Sorry Nike, but you said it best. I’m just re-endorsing your brand so can I get a check? A small one?
All jokes aside people, if you don’t simply make it work it won’t. You can get the hottest product, the newest training, the hottest sidekick- its all worthless without proper execution. And the only proper execution is Execution itself. Get it done.

LEARN AND PROGRESS. That is all I can suggest. So meet me there. Get it done. And let’s celebrate success together people.

5 Thoughts of Wisdom

1. If you are right, then there is no need to get angry. And if you are wrong then you have no right to get angry.

2. Patience with family is love Patience with others is respect. Patience with self is confidence.

3. Never think hard about the past, It brings tears. Don’t think more about future, It brings fears. Live this moment with a smile, It brings cheers…

4. Every test in our life makes us bitter or better. Every problem comes to make us or break us. Choice is ours, whether we become victim or victorious.

5. Search a beautiful heart, not a beautiful face. Beautiful things are not always good, but good things are always beautiful.

How you treat your customers becomes your calling card.

26 Jun

How you treat your customers becomes your calling card.

So I’m in the process of finding a new apartment. And I made a list of the key elements: Travel costs, location and proximity to work are the three factors I’m focusing on. Actually they are the key factors we all should consider when moving besides the monthly rent/mortgage. Long story short the realtor who has the most appealing listings is horrendous. And as I sit here waiting for them again, I found a few lessons to be had. So here are my reflections.

-A lack of manners and common courtesy will lose you business.
The secretary is a first line of defense. When they are arrogant- you are seen as arrogant. That doesn’t sell. When she is pompous or not warm to your clients. You are the jerk. What I’ve seen in this recent stint of realty madness is that I’m quite dismayed to see people treat me with little care. Its my money that will pay you. So be nice. Aka- your customers want the royal treatment. A smile. Some coffee. Polite conversation also goes a long way. Make a connection with every client and or potential client/partner. They will remember you for it.

-Asking for additional funds before providing/furnishing services is unacceptable.
This infuriated me. Suggesting I pay the full fee and deposit asap to hold the apartment. I made a transferable deposit two weeks ago. Therefore the apartment is mine if all goes right. Or as we said as kids- I got DIBS! Don’t shake don’t clients or partners in a venture for money before you have met your end of the bargain. Hey we all know business is about a dollar. But when you try to fast talk your way into a wallet you come across as one of two things: a snake or a con man. In this case it was worse as I was well aware of what he was up to. Using fear tactics to sell me a dream I hadn’t seen or had yet. And the BBB will get my letter. Money comes with math and emotions- so make people Happy and they will spend.

-Reputation suffers and Referrals are lost when people dislike the treatment they receive.
Your reputation must be guarded zealously. Trust opens door and wallets and when it is absent so is continuous cash flow. People want to use word of mouth. No one uses a contractor they haven’t heard of. No one buys a car they never drove or haven’t seen at least a decade of review for. In fact most people stick with one car brand for most of their adult driving lives. Why? The car and its manufacturer lived up to the reputation that secured the original purchase. Without a solid reputation you will lose referrals which means customers, clients, partners, and success will not be yours. Sure you could chisel a few people here and there but it isn’t worth the quick buck to lose your reputation. A grand now doesn’t beat five grand residuals monthly. Remember that.

-Consistent lateness isn’t ever cool or acceptable.
Every appointment and phone call has been later than promised. In a person to person business this is highly inflammatory. As a business owner and a customer I abhor the treatment I’m receiving. It took three hours to see two apartments two blocks apart- ok three blocks. And this was because the person showing the unit had better things to do than be on time. And this habit, yes habit has happened thrice. Yup you read right. She has been late to appointments three times.
there is no fashionably late in business. If you aren’t late for work NEVER be late for your business. The guy arriving early and staying late is the one to watch. He’s putting in the hours. Capt tardy- he has fun but I wouldn’t join his mlm or buy life insurance from him. And what’s more people will not refer him as we previously discussed. Don’t cut your income short with disastrous habits. Build a dream with due diligence, respect and timeliness.

-Have a great product.
I can’t stand this realty office. At every turn they have disappointed me. The service is lousy and they are so focused on claiming fees they don’t treat my wife and I well. The kicker is I’ve liked every apartment they’ve shown us. They hit the mark on the head four out four times! My ideal area, price and layout. Even the parking is decent. This is where they have me over the barrel. They don’t quite know it, but its true. And the lesson here is always have a great product. Never sell crap. Never sell what you wouldn’t buy. Never join a venture or brand you can’t be proud of. Whether its life insurance, vitamins, numismatics, or a service model- sell the best. McDonalds business isn’t hamburgers. Its real estate and a superior system. They buy the most lucrative locations. Then they sell you the turn key system to make your franchise profitable. This is the best product (Not the food per say but the success strategies).
Think about that.

Remember:
Always treat a client or partner better than you expect to be treated.
Always be on time.
Always have the superior product.

Your circumstances Don’t dictate your success (so much as your surroundings).

25 Jun

Your circumstances DO NOT dictate your success- so much as your surroundings.

So I’ve been kicking this topic around upstairs for a while. And it seems to be a lesson that we all have had but seem to forget.

-Success is a given- when we follow certain rules. The situation that sinks a vast majority is they prefer their own rules. I have had two mentors in recent years. And both have said a lot of similar things.

-Both said my businesses were a numbers game.
-Both said it wasn’t always what I said but how it was said and the posture from which it was stated.

-Now the first statement is true even if you’re a lawyer. In that example you have to get a majority of twelve to concur to reach your verdict. And to reach partner you usually have to add to that task to the one of billing a healthy amount of hours. Its always a numbers game people. Sales. Art. Anything. Even Picasso and Davinci wouldn’t be valuable if not for the number of works they did. In their respective cases the works are limited. And since there is a smaller pool of work the value is greater. In car sales you have to create a vast amount of sales, so here your quantity has to rise exponentially to get to the top. Get the gist?

-My mentors were big on what you said, how you said it and keeping cool. Now that doesn’t mean you are the Fonz or you never show emotions. Wrong. Money comes with math and emotions. And that’s a big point but let’s examine the former points. In business a lot of people fail for using their exuberance incorrectly. You have to say the right thing. Not be right. Your venture may be amazing and makes millionaires daily. Your product might cure cancer- but if people feel you are selling crap- they won’t buy it.
-Saying the right thing at the right moment comes with practice and training. This indirectly relates to the numbers game as well. The more you approach people the more you will refine your game. Also you have to realize what statements and platitudes sound false when coming from you. If you declare you’re a boss, or you’re rich and mom is your landlord- they aren’t buying it. So learn the methods that work. Speak to what appeals to each person individually. Solve THEIR problems. Coach THEM. When you are relatable and believable, the people will follow. And to the last point- don’t lose your cool when you are rejected. Its tacky. Its pointless. And you never know who is watching. Your next partner, sale, or friend is where you weren’t looking so stay with your A game.

-My final point is this: I covered the rules you must follow. And they are simple. But the bigger point is you won’t win if you aren’t in a circumference of winners. A lot of us love our friends and family. We revere people who wish us bad. We spend time with people who can’t stand any success we may have. And that’s normal. And will aways happen if you don’t make a choice. When you run with losers you are one. When you run with sheep you will be sheared. More simply and less rude- When you run with workers you Can’t be a Boss. Your friends, like my friends, are cool. And they have been their for us. Yet if they mock or simply don’t support your vision then why are you spending time with them? Some of the people we love the most will be the biggest roadblocks. And as that is the hard reality I ask what will you do? I don’t ask that we become modern day Judas’. But I will insist we put to the side those who impede our greatness. When you play small we all lose. You are not here to serve only you. We all have integral rolls to play. If your friends spend all of your time together trying to stop your progress- they may not be your friends. They may also simply not understand you. In either case it is you who loses so it is you who must guard your future. People whom I love, I’ve had to be cast aside. I love them and in a pinch I’m there. However, in day to day life I’m not with them. I only surround myself with winners. The people I read, talk to, and work with are those whose goals either mirror mine or who have surpassed mine. This one simple shift I believe can change our lives.
It is akin to the guy who always dates rebound chicks. He has someone to occupy his time but no one to BUILD WITH. Life and Business are both team sports. So who will you choose for your team?

#thriveorsurvive.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

Find your sweet spot

24 Jun

Find your sweet spot
(Aka your most productive time of day.)

Ok so I’m sure a lot of my readers noticed that I had to guest post yesterday. And worse I tried a time switch on when I posted my articles. Disastrous moments. You see I tried to attempt a change that wasn’t doing to suit my business model when it comes to my blog. I learned a few lessons from this and ill share them now.

First- If it aint broke don’t fix it.
I shouldn’t have changed. Now that sounds ignorant to some, I know. But I knew I’d have a hard time switching and did it anyway. My timing and groove has been pretty sweet and when I switched it I lost some of that- a lot actually. So if in your business or in anything in life: what works don’t fix. Stick with it and ride it out. When it falters. You will know. And when results drop, if you monitor those, you will know.

Second- stick with what you know, adjust accordingly.
I shouldn’t have changed the timing said that. I knew what worked for me and didn’t adhere. Ignorance wasn’t the culprit. The culprit was a knee jerk reaction. I decided to make a change and did it. I didn’t think it through. What should have occurred? The right way to do this was a twenty four (24) hour wait period. No business decision, or any decision for that matter, should be made quickly. Rash and prudent are two vastly different concepts. What solution would really kill right now? Write at the same time and send blasts in the AM. Write at the same time and publish using the que or advance feature to set the timing to coincide with what my readers want. You see I learned these ideas after rushing into a change. I missed them by not waiting. Lesson learned on my part. What are you rushing into? What shouldn’t you do? Ponder that my friends.

Third- Find your most productive day or most productive time of day in relation to specific tasks.
Now that my friends is the true meat of my article. You see we all have a time of day when we are tebow, lebron, manning, or jordan. The question is do you know this time of day when you reach your pinnacle? Some of you folks are morning people. Others only thrive at night. I am a night person. I do well in the morning don’t get me wrong but for completion on the play concerning this blog- night time. I get most of my best ideas in the afternoon. Specifically during my gym time which is between four and six pm. You see I’ve not only examined what time works for me but what times and what activities produce the greatest efforts throughout my day. The lesson here is that we have to collect data- Even On Our Selves. Take time to examine what is and isn’t working in every aspect. Remember knowledge is always power. And to be successful you have to move from a position of power and maintain a posture of power. And a simple way to begin that process is data collection.
Find your sweet spot. Know when you are productive and increase your productivity.

ITS ALL OVER

20 Jun

Its all over.

Newspapers are dying.
Netflix is killing satellite.
Roku and Hulu are taking a chunk out of regular cable and satellite.
Tv as we know it is dead.

Media has to change. Tv is dead. At least in the form we know it. Its akin to a plane where the pilot is dead and no one knows yet because auto-pilot is still on for now.
Change is a must. Nothing stays the same.
And while some cycles will repeat everything will inevitably change.
And so today’s challenge is simply will you change? Will you rise to the occasion or stay where you feel comfortable.

-In order to build upon this let’s start with simply accepting the necessary change. Once you admit that your plans have to be variable by nature you are on the way. Committing to change is the key step.

-Next in line you have to explore what you can change immediately. Examine your business model and look for ways you are falling behind the times. If you are a dot com maybe you blog now. If your android maybe its blackberry time. (I know everyone says they’re failing but multi-billion dollar quarterly revenues say otherwise). Change isn’t easy but starting with small steps will build momentum.

-After that go for what you don’t like to do. What you loathe changing. How do you determine these items/matters? Collect data. See what is and isn’t working in your venture. If you have three ad campaigns and two have a low percentage of conversions then your focus is to wide spread. Collecting data will illuminate failures, missteps, and missed opportunities. Elevation is always the goal and as such you have to look for the ways to achieve this actively. Take the helm and steer your venture to greatness.

Parting thought: The music industry model has failed. Vigorously. The people in charge are clinging to a model that failed almost a decade ago. And instead of growing with the trend they persecute the people who buy the music. And what’s worse is the artists cosign this behave in the mad dash for cash. Many artists even sign 360 deals which in effect give their record label a percentage of anything they do for the life of the contract. In essence your sweat builds their empire. So signing to a major is in effect worthless for many artists as evidenced by the amount of artists going the indie route and self releasing. (See Pretty Lights.). I guess some people want to go the way. of the dinosaur. And this too plays its part as the weak are weeded out via extinction. So Elevate or die.

There is no success to be found where change isn’t welcome.

Training: Buy and Apply

19 Jun

Training: Buy and Apply.

Training who needs it?
I haven’t seen this topic covered too much on the blogs or in general. The answer is EVERYBODY.
In every aspect of life you have probably had a teacher or a mentor. Someone generally illuminates the path for us. This is highly beneficial and should always be sought out.
And so-

-Training- BUY it.
WHY you ask?
I counter with why not?
In business you need a good cpa, no question. And the cpa in question should be proficient at a minimum. Same for your doctor right? Well these professionals. Accrued hundreds if not thousands of hours to obtain their licensing. And they also maintain their licensing by continuing education. To be the best you pay a price. And to excel beyond your last point you pay more. So why is it that some will assume they don’t need to cough up some cash to get ahead. What makes you different?
You are starting your own business or already have one if you’re one of my regulars. If you’re not you probably will. That being said if you could learn your business and skip hundreds of small failures for a small cash price wouldn’t that be worth it. Now failures make us stronger but there is a limit to finding inner strength and wasting time. Don’t you win if you skip ahead? Remember monopoly? You pass ahead of the guy with eight hotels with a simple roll of the die and you exhale in relief. Still not sure you want to duplicate that process on your terms?

-Training- APPLY IT.
This is going to sound ridiculous. I acknowledge many will say so and stop reading even. However many buy and ignore. More people buy to feel they are doing and never will. Let’s examine that.
Ever bought a gym membership you didn’t use? You paid the fee, made a resolution, and then life had other things in mind.
Or you dated a girl who prepaid her yoga classes so her and her friends could go and bond and grow? And in the end she was watching Sex and the City instead? A final favorite is the guy who joins a venture and it requires licensing so he pays out the refundable fee and decides he has better things to do than recoup that money and learn, aka MIND his business. I’ve seen a lot of this and its always the same thing. The back hurts. The engine wouldn’t turn over. But the sad truth is what we want we go out and get. So if you paid for a training series why won’t you take it. And then refresh it a few months later? If you don’t learn these basics you will get nowhere.
And you know what? I used to make this same mistake. I bought good training and didn’t use it. I took the next step only to sit down instead of running. And even worse- I did this twice! Yup I admit it. I bought programs that I knew worked from having seen it first hand. I spent my money, I talked about the freedom I’d gain, and then I turned on the you tube. Or I went out with the boys. People the time is now. Seize the day. Move forward. You spent the money. You invested in your freedom and your future. Now spend the one asset you won’t recover- TIME.

Buy your training.
Apply your training.
And then study it all over again.
And AGAIN.

Remember:
We don’t esteem that which we obtain too easily so earn your freedom and your wealth know and enjoy all of your days.

“Insanity is doing the same thing, over and over again, but expecting different results.”
― Albert Einstein
