Are You Running in Place?

Are You Running in Place?

I’m going to keep tonight’s article short.
Heck, I may even rant a bit. But the point. will be clear. Are YOU running in place?
I was. Let’s break it down.

My friends and I would make up the best ideas. We would write them out. Talk all night. And then we did nothing. Fast forward a decade and a lot of my friends did nothing. Well, to be truthful I waited a while too. I started a few projects and never finished. I kept all my materials which I count a success, but it doesn’t mitigate the loss of action. You see that being marked as a success is akin to running in place. It symbolizes me taking action but not moving forward. Running in place is poison.

I’ll give you another example: John Q joins Simucore. The newest network marketing company with a billion in revenue already! He is excited. He is pumped, and he’s paid up. Now he’s at home on Xbox. Great system too- the xbox I mean. He hasn’t spent a minute learning his business, compensation plan, or tried recruiting. Heck, he joined- Good enough! WRONG! John Q is Running in Place. He started the race but paused after the pistol. This happens to many of us. We join and figure good enough. I once joined a biz and then did nothing after the 2nd day. I figured hey, I’m in business. No big deal. I’m doing great! Time will be on my side. And so I made no money. I made no gains. I also had money going out monthly on product. I loved the product- but lost out due to inactivity. Don’t be Me. I’m not (anymore).

How do you beat this?
-Make a list of goals to hit.
Your list has to be everything you need to achieve and the things you want to achieve.
Every time you accomplish one goal add one. Its not enough to be moving you have to be winning. And when you’re up aim higher.
-Tell everyone your goals and plans.
Tell’em all! Heck, put it on facebook! Make yourself publicly accountable and watch the results add up. No one wants to fail in public. and the haters will only add fuel. This concept is sound and works great if you do it repeatedly.
-Accountability Partner.
Lastly you want an accountability partner.
Find another entrepreneur and make a pact. Another hungry soul that wants what you want: success. Make each other accountable by any means necessary. The secret to making this work? Easy. You work and play with this individual. When you hangout with winners you win. When you hangout with losers you lose. And when you are all at the bar for happy hour, instead of meeting clients or studying spreadsheets-
you’re running in place.

Hurricane Sandy and Your Business

29 Oct

Hurricane Sandy and Your Business.

Here in New York and in a few other states we have had a tremendous issue named Sandy. Fema, National Guard- everyone is on alert. As I type this my lights are flickering repeatedly. However I’m not scared. Nervous, yeah a bit. But I’m ready. I’ve planned and prepared. So before I lose track, or lose electricity I’m going to bang this one out for my devoted readers. Thanks for the feedback and the belief in my body of work.

-Be Prepared.
As soon as I heard we were off from work Monday it hit home. This is real. I filled every plausible receptacle in my home with clean water. Then I text messaged everyone I knew that would be affected by schools closing in our borough. Always look out for others. After that I moved my car to a spot 80 feet from my main point of egress and away from trees simultaneously. This reduced risk and eases escape if necessary. I also bought much more water and food. I had a good stash but wanted extra. I even bought comfort food and M&Ms. Even my cats were prepared. Our Go-bag was packed with everything except paperwork. So we lost points there but were ready to see and fight and escape to high ground as needed. Heck I even cooked a lot of rice- not sure its durable quality, but it made me feel safe.
The lesson here is I made a few mistakes and should have had it all ready before hand. But I made up time in a rush and my family was ready for a few days of struggle. And in your business its the same as in life.
Are you ready? Are you prepared? Are you incorporated to shield yourself from loss?
Do you have business insurance as well?
Have you prepared for tragedy as well as competition? Do you know your odds and your methods to have sustainable income?
Do you have a mentor to walk you through these steps and others? Someone to pat you on your back or kick you in your rump.
Get prepared. If you are. Supplement what you have done.

-Don’t Let Fear Dominate.
People said flooding and waves. Yikes.
They said 200 mph winds and trees through windows. Yikes. And while this may occur for some, we are doing well here. Mayor Bloomberg dropped the ball a few years ago in a major snow storm and this time he took no chances. And while I applaud his efforts- I wasn’t scared either time. I was ready.
People will let fear dominate them. It will consume their minds and hearts. First it will stop them by freezing their actions. And after awhile it becomes a known excuse and a regular one.
Don’t be that guy. Fear is an animal but fear can destroy you or build you up (search my blog for the term Fear). Be strong. Be ready and fear becomes an ally not a demon.

How you prepared for this storm is indicative of how well prepared you are for this business.
So let’s see how I racked up:
I had go-bags but not my paperwork.
I had food and upwards of 6 gallons of water for consumption and cleanliness. I think this was about 2 to 3 days not counting the juices and teas in my home. I had food canned and uncanned and cooked more. I also bought more food to supplement. However I lacked transport quality containers. My plan was based on my car. I did move that though. I had crank flashlights and survival knives and tools. A compass candles galore- the works. But I lacked a secondary power source. Get that folks. We all need a crank or generator.
A huge plus is that I had no fear and had many of these items ready to go weeks before Sandy was a threat.

So you be my judge. But remember that fear will cripple your business. It will cripple your mind and shatter your dreams.
Be prepared, use the fear and you will be invincible.

Quick Lessons I Learned Bouncing a VIP Party Last Night

28 Oct

Quick Lessons I Learned Bouncing a VIP Party Last Night.

So I worked a party in Brooklyn on my birthday. And it was interesting to say the least. The venue was pretty sweet and the music was great. I’m going to list a few things that did and didn’t work for you.

-Location, location, location.
This place was great. It had parking, easy to reach from the highways and so forth. I came from a different borough and still got there real quick. The venue itself was rooftop and had amazing views of the skyline. From the security standpoint it was easily defensible and controllable which I appreciated. These things created optimal conditions. Any realtor will tell you location beats all.
What business is McDonald’s in?
Not burgers folks.
Not even selling proven systems.
Real estate. McDonald’s has surpassed even the Catholic church as the largest land owner in the world. They buy prime locations and resell/lease them. Where you sell, market, or recruit is more important than many people realize.

-Planning and Execution
The event had all the trimmings. There was music, lighting, dj equipment, amps et al. They had staff and security. However there was poor execution. A good few items were not found or simply not brought. This impeded order and profitability. Simply planning for an event or business move isn’t enough. Its the execution and follow through that make you successful.

-Funding.
A lack of funding killed the VIP section at the party. And it would have added some 30% to the take. Aka the profits. It was to be a heated tent at the highest point of the rooftop party with bottle service and more. However the budget fell to pieces. Secure funding for your entire plan asap. Don’t assume things will work; assume they won’t. To have adequate funding 3 weeks prior to the date of an event is key. All along you should have also been making deposits and such but you need cash on hand and cash for emergencies. Set the bar higher.

-Team Unity.
One great asset was that my partner and I were of one accord. No matter who was there and what happened we had each others’ back. We weren’t worried about our safety so much because we knew someone had an eye open. Your team has to be a cohesive unit. It has to be well coordinated, well funded and well led. It also requires they be on the same page. They have to know what is expected and also want to work together. A united team is like a rope made of multiple strands- it has greater strength than any single strand.

-Funding comes before fun.
Birthday or not I have a commitment and a family to provide for. While there are just the two of us it is still a focus of mine to bring in more. And with Sandy approaching it worked out well as I bought supplies and had extra cash on hand.
Also as an entrepreneur I need additional funding to procure the necessities of any good start-up. Advertising, internet, incorporation costs- all require funding. And as such it behooved me to put aside 10 hours on my birthday. This little sacrifice has led to more contacts and more work. It also has provided me with a greater network. And as I mentioned, the cash was pretty cool too.

Priorities people. They can shift but require you know what needs to get done. Small sacrifices will build bridges to great freedom.

Complacency, Distraction, and other Devils

20 Oct

Complacency, Distraction, and other Devils.

So life is a mess!- for average folks.
No. I’ll rephrase that. People who want average things or put out average effort end up in a mess. I know a few devils that I let hold me back and I’m going to discuss them here so we can all learn together. Complacency, Distraction, and

-Complacency.
Complacency is a robber. It is called a valid contentment by some but I think that’s malarkey. Complacency robbed me a few years ago. You see I got a great job with the city. Benefits galore, great hours, room for advancement, free tuition and good pay.
Pretty cool right? Wrong. I went into that job with dreams of an LLC and making moves. I didn’t follow through though. I got comfortable in my steady check. When I was a freelancer I was looking to make money not take a check. And I had to suffer a major setback to move forward again. Now I’ve kept my job, I won’t lie. I love it. Also I’m no longer complacent. Seeing what awaits me is kindle for my fire. It sets me in motion, gets me amped. I may even retire from my job- but I will have independent wealth regardless. In my last three ventures I’ve made money or value. I learned great skills too but even better- like I said, I made $$$. And I did it for me. By me. My sweat and tears and team building yielded fruit. And guess what, it only happened when I decided making good money wasn’t enough. It happened when I decided that short hours weren’t enough. What’s holding you back?

-Distraction.
When you become distracted from your goals, from your drive for success- you lose. ever watch a batter who is at bat? He has to tune the world out. That pitch comes fast. It comes hard. And he has to get it to achieve. Ted Williams used distractions to increase focus. The press and their irritation’s fed him. He used it. Sadly most people don’t. If your friends want your time, your family wants your time, the xbox, or PS3- RUN! When you aren’t focused on your main goal you won’t make it. Just quit. Everybody has excuses to avoid success don’t be everybody. Be the best. The cream rises to the top. The people want leadership. The losers want distractions. Lead don’t follow. Books not Television.
Get the gist?

-Paperwork.
Please folks- keep your paperwork in order. Being lazy, or messy never ends well for a business owner. Taxes, expenses, lodging- get the software if you have to. LAZY is not cool!

We Accept What We Think We Deserve

19 Oct

We Accept What We Think We Deserve.

Simple. Wrong. Frustratingly Factual.
Its kind of upsetting folks that this one thought process ruins lives and dreams systematically.

-Accepting less than you deserve.
In life you deserve the best. No questions asked. The question is will you accept that?
Will you accept the blessings and responsibilities that come with it?
Your Mindset will literally predict your income and success levels. When we tell ourselves we deserve nothing- WE GET NOTHING! Simple as that. I can predict a prospect or students fiscal trajectory with a few questions. And the less they expect out of life and out of themselves the less income they will generate. The less mental wealth they will accrue.
To get to the top you have to first believe you actually belong there. If you don’t, well you don’t. A champion first believed that they were already champions, it was only a matter of time and commitment. Nothing else. Ever hear doctors tell sick patients that a positive outlook literally effects them? It does. What is your mindset?
Are you willing to accept that you are amazing? That you deserve it all?
Don’t forget the responsibilities of greatness. To whom much is given much is required. When you reach your zenith you must give back. Others must be shown the same path. This will reward both your heart and your wallet. Pretty cool I say.

-Playing small.
Playing small serves no purpose.
No one was made to be nothing- pardon the double negative, it’s intentional. Greatness is destiny. There is unlimited potential in all of us. Reach for it. When you achieve build off of it. Every achievement is a stepping stone. as such you must continually progress to being greater than you are today. Your tomorrows don’t belong to you so make them amazing for others and you will in turn be amazing. Be a wellspring of true greatness.

-Manifest your success.
The easiest way to break this down is that its exactly what it sounds like. Only you have the ability to create your success. You may come from wealth, or have a huge family company- irrelevant. And I know a lot of people will argue me on this but my position is simple: you are only successful by your OWN hand. What you create, design, or maintain. How many lottery winners aren’t broke 5 years after they win? Heck 2 years creates a path of tragedy that for some even culminates in suicide. How sad that is. Some people inherit vast empires and run them into the ground ruining that which their forefathers sweated for. You see what you don’t have equity in you don’t value. As this works out in my head means only one thing: you make yourself what you are. Statistics would label me a failure based on generic acquired data. To put it another way an unacceptable percentage of males in my position, sex, race, etc fail at life. Yet I never accepted failure as an option. I have had numerous pitfalls and I myself have been the author of my disaster at times- and I always bounced back. Deep in my heart there is a fear of failure. But there is a bigger fear of not being me. And I’ve always wanted to be the best or amongst the best. I want to win. I meditate on thriving and not surviving (#thriveorsurvive).

7 Tips to Build THE LinkedIn Super Network

18 Oct

7 Tips to Build THE LinkedIn Super Network

Social networking has increased internet use and become a boon to big and small businesses alike., LinkedIn may just be the most critical as many business owners and decision makers congregate there.  The key to making it work is to not simply connect with your cousins, bros, and frat members, but cultivate, unique and critical relationships with both other business owners and potential clients.

However this Super Network won’t happen in 24 hours.  I’ve got 7 tips to get you the true benefits of a LinkedIn

1. You must Optimize your profile: right out the gate the easiest way to do this is change your profile picture. LinkedIn considers this freshness so to speak and it may help your ranking when others are searching for just what you have or are.

2. Tell people who you are, who you help and how you help them in your headline: If your headline communicates these it will grab a person’s attention. If I don’t read your headline and know exactly what you offer and why I need you and not the next guy in the cue- you’ve already lost me.  Be clear and compelling folks.

3. All current and past work experiences must be filled out: People are always looking for you.  Maybe not you but what you offer and a past acquaintance may be just the thing to swing their vote in your favor. When you list all of your places of employment, including where you went to school, you create a vast net for catching those who are a perfect fit and those who need your resources and skills. Also these connections may be through people you don’t know personally but through other relationships you’ve made.

4. Join targeted groups: This is perhaps the most effective way you will connect with professionals of the same mindset.  These groups are filled with people serious about their LinkedIn network.  These are the folks looking for deeper connections. Participation in these groups fosters a greater exchange of knowledge between you and others.

5. Create a targeted group: Leading a group can give you a certain level of credibility.  It also allows you to connect with serious professionals on your field.

6. Use personal invites: I think these surpass connection requests. This is the first time people hear from you.  So make what they see count.  Be cordial, engaging, and helpful.

7. Endorsements and recommendations go along way: This will enhance your profile.  However done wrong you are self-sabotaging.  Mass/generic e-mail to clients or colleagues asking for written recommendations etc isn’t proper. . 1st, make a list of those who have great stories about you to share.  2nd, contact them personally.  A call is best but a personalized email will do.   Let them know your intentions and discuss how you helped them in the past so they know what story would work best.  Endorsements are the same, and are a simple click of the button too. And don’t forget to let them know you will be endorsing their strong suits, or unique skills as well.

Find Your Rhythm (Find Your Fuels 3rd installment)

15 Oct

Find Your Rhythm.

Life moves fast. And odds are you are wasting a hefty amount of time not by being unproductive but by being off point. Ever notice that when you’re in the groove things work in an almost magical way. Your stars align, the trains on time, and the dry cleaner made your suit ever so crisp.
The secret here isn’t vitamins or magic incantations or mystical blessings.
It’s Finding Your Rhythm.

-Go With Your Gut.
At every turn their are options. You have to focus and learn to know without knowing. And no, I’m not a Jedi. What I am saying is that we all have an intuition. Intuition let’s you see what’s coming albeit not as clear as a picture. Intuition is what I consider to be my guiding light. It will show me many paths and usually in an order that precipitates growth, peace, or success. I’ve had my intuition show me danger and save me from it. Literally. I’ve met people who would bring me harm or rob me of my peace. And intuition has shown me out the gate that these people are poison. And so I avoided them. This is really important folks. Many people will disrupt your rhythm. In fact they may come into your life only to do just that. Many people thrive on bringing failure to others. And knowing to avoid them alone will bring you unparalleled success. This is essential when picking your team folks.
Intuition will help you feel what avenue to travel on the road to success. Ever worked a job you hated? And from the first day it felt wrong? There was a voice inside of you that knew this wasn’t right. At that point you were out of your rhythm. Not every dollar is a good dollar. And most jobs we take can be equated to slavery. Why you ask? Because even though you are paid you are suffering the whole time. Someone else is winning off of your efforts. For me I feel this a lot. I have a great job. Love it. However it isn’t what’s best for me. Rising to the top as an entrepreneur is. How do I know?
The idea brings me peace.
The idea has been there since critical thinking’s inception in my cranium.
And as my intelligence has grown so has my intuition. And both tell me its time to fly solo.

-Dancers.
Lastly have you seen Dancing with the Stars? A lot of these people can’t dance. They have no rhythm. They are out of sync. And it shows. Do you see where you are out of sync? Are you aware you are off rhythm to the Beat of Life? Finding your rhythm will be akin to fresh air. It will be like enlightenment to a Buddhist I hope this last bit of imagery illustrates how important it is to Find Your Rhythm.

Your Feelings on Taxation May Indicate Your Success Ceiling

10 Oct

Your Feelings on Taxation May Indicate Your Success Ceiling.

Touchy subject, I know. And folks outright I’m telling you- pay your taxes!
No ifs ands or buts!
The issue I’m talking about today is fearing the tax man. If you play it straight there is no need. So let’s break this down a bit.
Also I’m not a licensed financial advisor so everything I state is conjecture and opinion.
Aka I’m not liable ;).

I have a coworker who does 90 to 100 hours of work a week. And that’s between two jobs. At his night job he’s a supervisor. And in the day he’s at the bottom of the pay scale. When I approached him with simple ways to raise his pay via union and or company related methods that were low cost he said ‘naw then I have to pay more taxes.’. He essentially turned down about 10 to 12 grand in extra income to do the same hours, same labor. I’m sorry folks but in my book that is the definition of insanity.
He has dependents.
He has a home.
His spouse has a home based business.
These are all great tax deductions.
Also he could make that money and have it go to pre-tax retirement funding or medical funding plans to offset future costs. See he would in essence be funding both his present and his future with the governments blessing. He’d also gain peace of mind and some extra coin in his pocket.
However he won’t do it. Which leads us to the next issue.

-Self imposed failure
Folks I’m not being mean. I’m not a jerk either. I just call an ace an ace and a spade a spade. What my coworker is doing is self imposed failure. Simply put that is when you are the author of your own disaster. Sadly this ruins more entrepreneurs than competition. Fear of taxes and the long arm of the irs is gutting people. Look at the coming elections and the current fear many business owners have. Taxes from healthcare, 75% tax brackets in france. People who can are avoiding it and saving wealth and others are simply self sabotaging. I personally am more scared by the fear. The only way to beat the system is to learn it’s rules. The tax code has ways to enable you. Get a great CPA. Not the local guy. Learn the rules. Life is chess not checkers and as such you have to move from that mindset and rule group.

-Owning your own business can help stave off taxes legally.
Lastly, if you are scared of taxes don’t be. Uncle Sam rewards those who give back by creating jobs. The people who become the stopgap are those who will be richly rewarded. When you make a greater effort there is a greater reward. Its that simple. Ever put your all into something?
What did you reap? I bet more than you did when you put in less effort. See Jeter, Jordan, Bloomberg and the rest. To get to the top you have to put your all in.
I have chosen the independent route. While I will keep my day job for now- I will be minding my business full time. It is the true way to survive. And while I’ve had a few failed options my learning curve has been tremendous. And all the while I reaped the rewards of tax benefits I earned legitimately. And its a good feeling. I earned income. I lost income. And I got tax breaks in all instances. It works folks.
If you step out of your comfort zone you will succeed.

Basically folks if you fear taxes you are living with a self imposed ceiling. You have literally told your mind and subconscious to program failure as the main option and catalyst. When fear becomes the strongest advocate your horizons shrink.
Let your life be more than that. If your tax bracket makes you feel pressure GOOD!!!
Pressure creates diamonds. Don’t let the fear of a small tax bill impede dreams of great wealth.
What is a million dollar tax bill to a billionaire? (And even that bill can be worked with via the United States governments legal tax code!).
See the point?

Quick Lessons from Conan the Barbarian

7 Oct

Quick Lessons from Conan the Barbarian

So I’m watching Conan the Barbarian and my readers know I’m an Arnold fan. Forget his personal drama but his story of success is mezmorizing and useful as a point of reference.

-Practice.
Conan practiced his arts regularly. Once he became a slave fighter he increased his skill set. He mastered different arts and fighting skills as well as writing, reading, and philosophy. Though only a slave he embraced these lessons to be his best.
Arnold did this to win Mr. Olympia as well. Over, and over again.
Practice makes perfect folks. Always in all ways.

-Steadfast Dedication.
Practice works but you have to commit. Steadfast dedication means you eat sleep and breathe your goals and dreams. There is no life that doesn’t stem from this mindset. Every action you take derives from it. This is the hardest obstacle. Its not making a decision, its sticking to it.

-Exercise Regularly.
Conan worked out. He practiced his grappling, sword fighting, and exercised a whole hell of a lot. So did Arnold. Any good Guru or leader knows what a true entrepreneur knows- exercise will change the paradigm of your life. It helps you grow, keeps you healthy and foments a mind that builds. Your body is a temple and as such requires you put in great effort. Yet the reward is greater. What you get out is what you put in.
As an avid body builder I’ve seen how it helps, I’ve lived it. In fact some of my best writing occurs when I’m in the gym. That’s true inspiration.

-Lead, Don’t Follow.
Conan, like Arnold lead by doing. Following is ok if you are a follower. Yet if you yearn to lead or feel its’ call- then heed it. Some of us are meant to lead. And to not heed the call leads to your failure and others failure as well. Who are we if we are not what our nature calls us to be?
I feel the call to lead. Even when I gain nothing I lead. I’ve always felt the pang of leadership in that I stand up for the weak, I fight for the confused, and now I’m a union rep simply so my co-workers have a voice of reason to reach out to. Be who you are called to be.

-Don’t beg.
In one scene Conan discovers a man chained to the wall. The man asks for food, telling Conan he hasn’t eaten in days. When asked who says he will eat the man replies ‘Give me food for energy so I can die fighting the wolves like a man and not starving like a pauper.’
See the Difference?
In one simple choice of phrasing the man sparked Conan’s interest not his pity or derision. When we approach others we must have the proper context. Begging might gain you a few bucks but sparking their intellect, making them want to join you- therein lies the path to gain and success. Christopher Columbus also knew the art of asking. He didn’t beg. He commanded attention by his audacious requirements and extreme supply list. History tells us the rest.
Never beg for that which they will give or which you deserve.

-Be Good to Friends and the Less Fortunate.
My last point leads to this one. The man who didn’t beg became Conan’s savior. Conan had not only fed this man but freed him and made him an equal. Then when he was crucified this same man freed him. Now we are not prone to being crucified or even living in such dire straights in this modern era.
Yet the lesson is the same.
When we are a good friend and champion of those who are weak and need defending we are always rewarded. Now don’t do it for the reward. Do it because it is right. But in the least, you will see gain when you I’ve morally my friends.

I’m too Busy Living my life to build my business

6 Oct

I’m too busy living my life to build my business.

I’m too busy living my life to build my business.
Sadly this statement comes to mean
I’m too busy living my life to live my DREAM. Ouch. What madness- or is it fact?
A lot of people have a million reasons to fail. And a million and ten to thrive. It is simply a matter of choice and will power.

-Choose.
We make choices all the time. From second to second, hour to hour, day to day, year to year. We make more choices than smiles.
And therein lies the first issue.
Are your choices making you smile. If you work a job you hate to have things you are not sure you need. Time to start over. You made the wrong choice buddy. A lot of times life boxes us in and the fastest way out is what we take. However it never quite yields the results we hope for. It may get you second place, but it doesn’t get you where you need to be. I’ve made this mistake. Heck I’ve made it at least once this year, and that’s what’s moved me to grow this blog. Its motivated me to make a choice. One choice.
To blog to my best ability. To blog quite often with the goal being a daily output to this blog of written word. I post pics and other goodies of course, things to motivate the mind and soul. However I want to blog daily in this format. Written word or spoken/filmed word. And I encourage your feedback to get me there. Comments support, criticism, heck curse me. You see I expect this. And if you see my comments received. I have been blessed! Now this relates simply in that I made a Choice.
One choice to navigate through everything else. And I’m hitting speed bumps regularly. I won’t quit though my friends. My choice has been made and my price has been paid. Choose wisely and run the gauntlet.

-Will Power.
Will Power moves us through our choices and beyond them.
Once a choice has been made we must move forward. Fast and clear. With fluid controlled motion and decisions that lead us to success in every motion. Will Power is the force that wakes you to see the next step through on your journey to the top.
Will Power will make you a Giant amongst men. It will get you to heights you could never imagine. The smartest man and the strongest man don’t win- The man with the greatest Will Power wins.
Will Power will take you through struggles and failures.
Will Power makes you walk through the mine field to get to the gold. The man with Will Power will not stop. A lot of us meet adversity and quit within inches of our goal. Not miles, not feet- inches. Will Power when applied moves mountains. Do it my friends.
